I NEVER Knew

So around the beginning of the year there started to be a lot of this going on with Makenna (which Never, Ever happens!!) She got a fever and a sore throat, so I took her into the doc because I thought she had strep. And I was right. Strep came back positive so we stared her on antibiotics. But 3 days later there was Still a lot of this happening and her fever had not gone away. So they had us come back in to the office to check her out.
When we got to the doctor she checked Makenna out and noted that her lymph nodes were still really swollen and her high fever should not still be going on, so she sent us up to the lab to do some blood work and figure out what was going on. The blood tests that could be run quickly all came back good, expect it was evident that there was still some kind of infection going on that the antibiotics were not taking care of. So the poor girl had to get two antibiotic shots in her thighs (NOT FUN!) and then we switched her onto 2 more antibiotics while we awaited the rest of the blood work to come back. They also made us an appt with an ENT to check her throat and make sure she didn't have an abscess on her her tonsils, as well as coming back the next day for more antibiotic shots in her thighs.
Conner, who was into wearing his power ranger costume (or Some type of costume) Everywhere, came along as comical relief for me. A moment to remember: when we went up to the lab to get Makenna's blood drawn it was a pretty crowded place. Naturally, Conner was getting a lot of looks and smiles and attention, which he totally feeds off of! While I was checking in with the receptionist she was saying hi to him, asking him his name, etc. to which he was answering back in a very tough, super hero kind of voice. Then she said "Are you going to protect us all from all the bad guys?" to which Conner stares her straight in the face and without even cracking a smile says "No. I will let the bad guys get(kill) all of you!" Poor receptionist didn't even know what to say. Seriously kid, what 3 year old says that? I was totally embarrassed but just pretended not to hear his response. Once we were back downstairs I gave him a little talking to and explained that if he wants to be a super hero his job is to Always protect everyone. To which he said (looking at me like I was crazy or something) "But I am only 3!" Kids!
Anyway, back to sick Makenna. So the next day we go to the ENT and everything looks good (thank goodness!) Then 5 minutes after leaving the office we get a call from our pediatrician saying that the rest of Makenna's bloodworm came back and it turns out she has Mono. WHAT?! What kind of 7 year old kid gets mono? Isn't that the kissing disease? Well, apparently mono is picked up like any other virus and can be contracted at Any age. The cool thing is that once you have had it, you are very unlikely to ever have an episode of it again. You are always considered to have it in your system once you have it once, but it normally stays dormant from then on. So she had to stay out of school until her fever was gone and her energy was back up again. And then she had to take it really easy for awhile. It was so weird having my high energy, rambunctious Makenna just wanting to lay on the couch so much. I felt so bad for her. But at least it was just a passing virus, and luckily no one else in the family ended up with it. The things you learn as a mom.
Makenna with her "get well" gift. Love my girl!
